All residents living in the catchment area of Bury St Edmunds Town Council, will be able to access free activities at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre this summer, thanks to a new initiative called Get Bury Active starting on 13th August.

Abbeycroft Leisure in partnership with Bury St Edmunds Town Council has launched the initiative with the aim of helping people to get active during the cost of living crisis.

For four weekends this summer, most activities at the leisure centre including swimming, gym, fitness classes and racquet sports will be free of charge for anyone who lives in the catchment.

Residents will need to register and book online to be able to access the free activities, but they can also do this at the centre itself.

Warren Smyth, chief executive `at Abbeycroft said:

“We know that being active can make a positive change to someones’ health and wellbeing and a lot of our work as a social enterprise, involves working with our partners in health to encourage inactive people to become active.”

“Removing as many barriers as possible to enable people to make healthy lifestyle choices is important, and we realise that for many, cost is a barrier right now during the latest crisis, so we’re very grateful to Bury St Edmunds Town Council for taking a proactive approach and funding this initiative, which we hope will help families and individuals who are struggling financially.”

Mayor of Bury St Edmunds, Cllr Peter Thompson, said:

“We’re happy to support Abbeycroft Leisure with this initiative, which we hope will help residents with the cost of living crisis.”

“We also hope this will give families and young people an opportunity to try something new at the leisure centre and experience how physical activity can make a positive impact on their lives.”
