The Cockfield Normans ride the distance from UK to Tanzania
October 12, 2021

Looking back on Love to Ride’s Cycle September – we’re reflecting on the achievements of Suffolk ambassadors ‘The Cockfield Normans’.

They joined the campaign in February this year and their cycling stats to date are pretty impressive.

99 year-old World War II veteran, Norman Gregory, has been cycling an average of 20 miles a day and has clocked up a staggering 3,772 miles, missing only nine days since February without cycling…wow!

Norman has recently had his third Covid vaccination and you guessed it, he cycled to Long Melford and back to have it done (19 miles).  He also cycled to Lavenham to have his Flu jab two weeks ago.

His good friend, Norman Kelly aged 70, took up cycling in 2007 after returning to Suffolk from Africa where he had worked for 8 years as a tea planter. Norman has now completed 4,393 miles giving the inspirational duo a combined total of 8,165 miles or just over the distance from the UK to Tanzania.

Norman said:
“Cycling has become part of my life, I just love it and I hope to be able to cycle until I’m 99 just like Norman Gregory.”
“ The autumn is a wonderful time to cycle and after the first mile (lungs full of fresh air) you feel on top of the world, and I would encourage anyone to give a go.”

With the current fuel crisis, it really is a great time to take up cycling or to get back into it if you haven’t cycled for a few years.

Love to Ride is a year-round, global campaign all about riding your bike and encouraging others to do the same, with lots of competitions and prizes throughout the year.

You will be joining a global network of people all cycling for different reasons such as:-

Emma. C from Suffolk “I ride because it’s faster than walking.”

Dave. V from Lowestoft “I ride because it keeps me fit and it’s a great social activity.”

Roger W – “I ride because I like getting into the countryside and enjoying the views.”
